Description
Over in the Old Testament, God spoke through prophet Isaiah saying, "For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring" (Isa. 44:3). Then again, He said, "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Spirit" (Joel 2:28-29).
In my study of the scriptures, I've found that in the Old Testament, only four categories of people or ministerial offices had the ministry or manifestation of the Holy Spirit. These include: (1) The prophet, (2) The priest, (3) The king and (4) Any other person(s) specially called and anointed by God to fulfil any special function or assignment. Every other person had to go to the one(s) who had the presence or anointing of the Holy Spirit to enquire of the Lord. The presence of the Lord was shut out from among the people and only made available and accessible to a selected few who were specially anointed by God to minister to the people.
But now, God speaks of a dispensation in which the Spirit will be poured out upon 'all flesh'. This is a time when everyone, irrespective of social or financial status, tribe or tongue, will have equal privilege of boldly drawing near to God in an intimate and loving relationship through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. This is a period when the presence of God will no longer be shut up in the temple, only to be accessed by the elite alone. But for this to happen, sin had to be dealt with, so that man could draw near to God without fear of condemnation.
According to the eternal plan and purpose of God, Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God, became human and took upon Himself the sins and iniquities of the whole world, and was judged on the cross. God exhausted the full measure of His wrath against sin on the body of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. The scripture tells us that God "made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" (2Cor. 5:21), and that, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree" (Gal. 3:13). Furthermore, we are told that Jesus "...bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed" (1Peter 2:24). Having satisfied the full demands of divine justice, the promise of the Spirit can now be received by everyone who believes in the finished work of the Son God- Jesus Christ.
Beloved, the gift of the Holy Spirit belongs to us today. God intends for all of His children to experience the fullness of the ministry of the Holy Spirit just as the first century believers had it. Do you believe this? This is the promise of the Father and it belongs to us today as much as it belonged to the church of the first century.
